Car Hire Excess Insurance, also known as Rental Vehicle Excess Reimbursement Insurance, protects you against more than just the standard excess. It also covers areas that often result in additional costs and are not always fully covered by the rental company’s insurance. When driving on unpaved roads, in mountainous regions or in the event of stone-chip damage, unexpected costs can quickly arise which you may otherwise have to bear yourself. With Allianz Travel’s Car Hire Excess Insurance, you are protected worldwide, whether you are travelling in Europe, North America, Oceania or elsewhere around the globe.

Secure Rent Car: Passenger cars with a maximum of nine seats, including the driver.

Secure Rent Camper: Motorhomes, campervans, recreational vehicles (RVs), camping vans and minibuses (exhaustive list).

When renting a vehicle, rental companies usually include a basic insurance policy. However, this often comes with a high excess, which can amount to several thousand Swiss francs or euros depending on the country and vehicle type. In the event of damage, you are responsible for paying this amount yourself. Certain parts of the vehicle, such as tyres, the underbody, the roof and glass components, are often not covered by standard rental vehicle insurance. Damage to these areas can occur easily, particularly when driving on gravel roads, camping away from paved routes or as a result of stone chips. Without additional cover, you may have to pay these costs yourself.

When travelling in a motorhome, campervan or minibus, the excess is often significantly higher than for a standard passenger car. In addition, these vehicles are larger, more difficult to manoeuvre and more prone to damage to the roof (e.g. from low branches or height restrictions) or the underbody (e.g. from uneven surfaces or kerbs). With Secure Rent Camper, you are optimally protected against these specific risks. For just CHF 12 per rental day, we reimburse the excess and provide additional cover for damage to: Tyres, Glass and plastic Windows, Underbody, Roof.

Car Hire Excess Insurance is ideal if you:

  • regularly or occasionally rent vehicles,
  • want protection against high excess charges,
  • travel in a campervan or motorhome,
  • are planning a leisure or business trip with a rental vehicle,
  • are travelling in countries where rental excesses are high, such as the United States, Canada or Australia.

Car Hire Excess Insurance reimburses the contractual excess charged to you by the rental company if the vehicle is damaged. In addition, damage to tyres, glass and plastic windows, the underbody and the roof is also covered.

Yes, Car Hire Excess Insurance is valid worldwide, regardless of the country in which you rent the vehicle.

Car Hire Excess Insurance is valid for the entire rental period specified in the rental agreement. You pay only for the days on which the vehicle is actually rented.

Yes, Car Hire Excess Insurance should ideally be taken out before the start of the rental period.

While the rental company’s collision damage waiver (CDW) generally covers major damage to the vehicle, it often includes a high excess (e.g. CHF 1'500 to CHF 3'000 or more). In addition, tyres, glass, the underbody and the roof are frequently excluded from cover. Car Hire Excess Insurance is specifically designed to close these gaps in protection.
